ABOUT THE PROJECT
Ask most families where they actually spend their evenings and it’s rarely where the floor plan says they should. Project Imran had a proper living room, dining room, and kitchen, but in practice, dinner happened at the counter, homework took over whatever surface was free, and the living room sat mostly untouched. The house had plenty of space. It just wasn’t being used as intended.
Before choosing a single finish, we mapped the family's actual routine instead of trusting the floor plan. Who cooks, and do they want to see the rest of the room while doing it. Where does homework actually happen, and does it need to be somewhere a parent can half supervise it while doing something else. Where do people naturally cluster the second guests arrive, and is that the room that was designed to hold them. The layout that came out the other side barely resembled the generic open plan template the house started with, because it wasn't built around a floor plan anymore. It was built around six o'clock on a weeknight.

CHALLENGES
The real difficulty wasn’t picking finishes. It was designing one connected space that could handle family life happening at once: a parent cooking, a child doing homework nearby, and someone else watching TV, all within sight and earshot without getting in each other’s way. Getting that right meant thinking as carefully about sightlines and traffic paths as we did about finishes.
Dividing the space back up with walls or half walls would have just recreated the original problem in miniature, three separate rooms wearing an open plan costume. Instead we opened clean sightlines between the kitchen, dining, and living areas so a parent at the stove can actually see the homework table, and built storage into every dead corner and underused run of wall so nothing had to live on a counter just because there was nowhere else for it to go. The kitchen island got pulled and reshaped specifically so cooking faces into the room instead of away from it, a small change that did more for how the space feels than any finish we picked.

SUMMARY
Project Imran isn't designed around a floor plan drawing anymore. It's designed around six o'clock on a Tuesday, someone cooking, someone doing homework, someone half watching television, all of it happening in the same room without anyone tripping over anyone else, which turns out to be exactly what this family wanted the whole time, they just didn't have the layout that let them have it.
The generous square footage the house always had is finally doing something instead of sitting there, labeled on a plan nobody actually followed. What used to be three separate, half-used rooms is now one connected space that genuinely works the way this family lives, with cooking, homework, meals, and downtime happening naturally alongside each other. The house hasn’t gained any space. It’s simply using the space it already has better.
